“Academic trip turns deadly” – 11 University students killed in road accident during academic excursion
On Monday, March 18th, a bus transporting students from Kenyatta University collided with a truck amidst heavy rain, resulting in the loss of 11 lives and leaving 42 others gravely injured.
The accident occurred at approximately 5:50 pm local time in Maungu, situated 360 kilometers from Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, as the students were en route to the coastal city of Mombasa.
According to authorities, the collision occurred when the university bus attempted to overtake a convoy of vehicles in adverse weather conditions, causing it to skid off the road.
This sudden maneuver forced the truck driver to veer away to avoid a direct impact, ultimately leading to the collision with the left side of the university bus.
Tragically, 10 individuals from Kenyatta University succumbed to their injuries on the scene, while another victim passed away later in hospital care.
Among the injured, 42 individuals are reported to be in critical condition.
