Moments later, Ruiz himself doubled the lead, unleashing a powerful shot from the edge of the box that left the Croatian goalkeeper helpless.

Spain continued to press their advantage, and just before halftime, Dani Carvajal extended the lead to three with his first international goal.

In the second half, Spain maintained control but were unable to add to their tally.

Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal came close to scoring on his European Championship debut, only to be denied by a brilliant save.

Croatia had a late chance to salvage some pride when they were awarded a penalty.

Unai Simon saved Bruno Petkovic’s spot-kick, and although Petkovic scored on the rebound, the goal was disallowed due to encroachment by Croatian players.

Spain’s next challenge will be against defending champions Italy on June 20 in Gelsenkirchen.
