Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has denied any involvement in the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Obasa was removed from office on Monday, January 13, 2025, following allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, corruption, and financial mismanagement. His impeachment was approved by 32 Assembly members.
Responding to the development, Governor Sanwo-Olu, through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, emphasized that the impeachment was entirely a legislative matter and that the state government had no influence or role in the process.

“It is purely a legislative matter, and the Assembly handled it as they deemed appropriate. It has nothing to do with the governor,” Akosile stated in an interview with The Punch.
He further stressed the importance of the separation of powers, a constitutional principle that ensures independence among the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary.
Obasa, who had served as Speaker since 2015, was impeached over multiple allegations, including corruption and financial mismanagement, which reportedly created tension between him and other lawmakers.
Following his removal, Mojisola Meranda, the former Deputy Speaker, was unanimously elected as the new Speaker, making her the first female Speaker in the history of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
While Sanwo-Olu has refrained from commenting directly on Obasa’s tenure, sources indicate the governor is optimistic about fostering a more collaborative relationship with the new Assembly leadership.
