‘We could have scored more goals’ – Chelle frustrated as Super Eagles drop points against Zimbabwe
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has expressed frustration following Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe in Uyo on Tuesday, lamenting his team’s missed chances in the first half.
Nigeria took the lead in the 74th minute through Victor Osimhen, but Tawanda Chirewa equalized for Zimbabwe in stoppage time.
The late equalizer leave the Super Eagles fourth in Group C with seven points, six behind leaders South Africa.
Chelle believes his team should have won comfortably, citing their wastefulness in front of goal.
“We could have scored ten goals in the first half. We made mistakes in the final moments, and Zimbabwe defended well,” Chelle said post-match.
He also blamed the team’s complacency after taking the lead.
“When we scored, we thought the game was over. It’s tough because my players were the better team on the pitch,” he added.
Nigeria now face a difficult path to 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification, with hopes resting on a strong finish in their remaining four games.
Chelle, however, remains optimistic about securing a second-place finish and a potential playoff spot.
“I am disappointed for my players and the country, but we will fight for second place,” he concluded.
