Insecurity: “Don’t sleep, enemies ain’t sleeping” – CDS tells troops
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has urged troops of Operation Fasin Yama in Sokoto to remain alert and committed to their duty, warning that enemies of the state are constantly on the move.
During a civil-military cooperation visit to Giginya Barracks on Tuesday, May 13, Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole delivered the message on behalf of the CDS.
He commended the troops of the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division for their resilience and proactive efforts in tackling insecurity in the North-West.
“The battle you are fighting is a just one. Don’t sleep, because your enemies are not sleeping,” Bankole told the troops.
He highlighted the importance of vigilance, inter-agency collaboration, and unity within the security forces.
Bankole also conveyed General Musa’s gratitude to the 8 Division for their dedication in safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity, protecting civilians, and maintaining good relations with host communities.
“The 8 Division has consistently earned praise at Defence Headquarters for its exceptional performance,” he added. “The CDS has personally asked me to commend your GOC and every officer under Operation Fasan Yama for a job well done.”
Bankole further stressed the importance of civilian cooperation in the fight against banditry and insurgency, encouraging troops to be approachable and respectful of human rights.
“Let people run to you, not away from you. The best intelligence comes from the civilians you protect,” he urged.
In his remarks, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, General Officer Commanding 8 Division, reiterated that success in asymmetric warfare depends not only on tactical victories but on winning the trust and support of the people.
“The Chief of Defence Staff’s leadership philosophy reminds us that real success in asymmetric warfare lies not only in tactical gains, but in winning the hearts and minds of our people,” he said.
The event also included a sensitization lecture on human rights, gender-based violence, and military ethics, emphasizing the professionalism and accountability expected from troops.
“As protectors of the vulnerable, we must embody empathy, discipline, and justice. Today’s engagement strengthens our collective resolve,” Ajose said.
Plans for medical outreach, sports, and media engagement were also discussed as part of efforts to strengthen military-community relations.
Bankole extended heartfelt wishes to the families of the troops, emphasizing the importance of their safe return.
“You were not dropped from the sky. You have children, siblings, and families. We pray that all of you return home safely, not in coffins,” he said. “Nigeria remains one. The bandits will not win, and our Armed Forces will not sleep.”
