The Kano State Police Command has arrested Mohammed Usman, a 27-year-old man, ex-convict, for allegedly deceiving and stealing mobile phones from women across the state by posing as a government aid agent.

Usman was apprehended on July 14, 2025, following a report from a woman in Ahmadiyya Brigade Quarters who claimed he tricked her into handing over her phone under the pretense of offering government intervention assistance.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, revealed that Usman was previously convicted two years ago for a similar offense and served a two-year prison sentence.

Further investigation uncovered at least 17 other women who reported comparable experiences, all victims of the suspect’s fraudulent scheme targeting unsuspecting women.

The police also arrested three additional suspects believed to be receivers of the stolen phones and recovered eight mobile devices. All suspects are cooperating with authorities.

State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, thanked the public for their support and warned against trusting unknown calls claiming to offer government aid.

Anyone with information or who has fallen victim to similar scams is urged to contact the police.
