“Obi must inform you” – Wike backs Edo governor’s call for Peter Obi to give prior notice before visiting
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has backed Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, saying he was right to demand prior notice from the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, before visiting the state.
Wike made the statement in Benin City during the launch of modern mass transit buses by the Edo State government.
He explained that at the level of a presidential candidate, any visit to a state requires informing the sitting governor for security and coordination purposes.
“When I was governor of Rivers State, when Peter Obi was coming to my state, he notified me, and I provided vehicles and logistics for him,” Wike said. “Because at that level, as a presidential candidate, anything that happens to him will be my fault.”
He then addressed Governor Okpebholo directly, saying:
“Governor Okpebholo, the statement you made is correct. Obi must inform you before coming to Edo State.”
Wike also dismissed claims that the governor had threatened Obi, stating that the request was standard and necessary.
