EPL: Salah under fire for ‘embarrassing’ Liverpool comments after Leeds draw
Mohamed Salah is facing backlash after accusing Liverpool of “throwing him under the bus” following Saturday’s 3-3 draw at Leeds United.
The 33-year-old remained an unused substitute at Elland Road and later suggested he was being unfairly singled out by manager Arne Slot.
Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has labelled the remarks “embarrassing” and disrespectful.

Salah’s outburst raises internal tensions
Speaking to reporters after the match, Salah claimed his relationship with Slot had suddenly collapsed and insisted he is being targeted despite his contributions to the club.
“It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus,” he said. “I earned my position. I don’t understand why I’m being blamed.”
Salah emphasised his long-standing commitment to Liverpool but said the current situation is “not acceptable”.
Form and selection issues fuel the rift
After powering Liverpool to the Premier League title last season with 29 goals and 18 assists, Salah’s output has dipped.
He has four goals in 13 league games this term, and Slot has benched him twice in the last three matches.
Sutton believes Salah’s comments undermine the squad’s collective effort. “If a player’s form drops, he’s the same as anyone else,” he said. “He thinks he’s too good to be benched.”
Carragher’s concerns resurface
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher previously criticised Salah for making disruptive comments when his contract situation came under scrutiny in late 2024.
Salah eventually signed a two-year renewal, but Carragher argued he only speaks publicly when it suits him, a theme that appears to be resurfacing.
Spotlight turns to Slot and Liverpool’s next move
With the January window approaching, Salah’s future is again being questioned.
Slot, already under pressure after inconsistent results, will be forced to address the issue publicly ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League trip to Inter Milan on Tuesday.
