Career
Kiss Daniel released his third follow-up single, “Laye”, on his birthday in May 2015, followed by a video two weeks later that was recorded in several places in eastern Africa and directed by AJE Films. It was named Best Video By A New Artist at the 2015 Nigerian Music Video Awards. Kiss Daniel released “Mama” as the fourth and final single from his debut studio album, New Era, in April 2016.
“Mama” was the most Googled song in Nigeria in 2016. It was placed second on 360nobs’ list of the biggest songs of 2016. Music critics gave the song a positive reception. Jim Donnett of tooXclusive classified “Mama” as a “typical love song” that was “executed with the styling of a banging turn-up jam”.
The accompanying music video for “Mama” was released on April 20, 2016. The video, directed by Aje Filmworks, depicts a car crash caused by the lead character’s use of her phone while driving. It was inspired by Kiss Daniel’s personal vehicle accident in January of that year, which he survived.
The week of May 8, 2016, “Mama” debuted at #4 on the Playdata #RadioTopTen charts, a weekly airplay tally that measures songs played on Nigerian radio and television stations. The following week, it became the most played song on the radio and eventually rose to the top spot. It remained at number one for four weeks before being moved to second place by Phyno‘s “Fada Fada”.
At the 2016 Headies, the record was nominated for Best Pop record, while Young Jonn won Producer of the Year. The song was also named Hottest Single of the Year at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards. Furthermore, the record was nominated for Viewer’s Choice at the 2016 Soundcity MVP Awards Festival, Best Artiste/Duo/Group in African R&B & Soul at the 2016 All Africa Music Awards, and Certified Banger of the Year at the 2017 tooXclusive Awards. Daniel’s debut studio album, “New Era”, was released on May 14, 2016.
After leaving his former label, G-Worldwide, he founded his own personal imprint, Flyboy I.N.C., and signed two artists, Demmie Vee and Philkeyz. Kizz Daniel was featured on Demmie Vee’s debut track, “You Go Wait?” in 2018.
Daniel had a successful year in 2018, as he collaborated with Wizkid on his song “For You” and Davido on another single, “One Ticket”, which debuted on the charts within 24 hours of its release. Kizz Daniel’s second studio album, No Bad Songz, and first under Flyboy I.N.C., was released on November 30, 2018.
The album included 20 tracks, including the pre-released single “One Ticket”, which featured Davido. The album also included Nasty C, Diamond Platnumz, Philkeyz, Demmie Vee, DJ Xclusive, Wretch 32, Diplo, and Sarkodie. The album received good reviews from music fans, debuting at No. 55 on the US iTunes Chart and rising to No. 1 on the Billboard World Albums chart within 24 hours of release. On June 25, 2020, he released his third studio album, King of Love.
Kizz Daniel performed his popular single “Buga” in Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, expressing his ambition to perform in the tournament and providing an update on whether he would be appearing at the world’s biggest footballing event.
On August 8, 2022, he was arrested in Dar es Salaam by Tanzanian police for failing to perform. On October 14, 2022, he released “Cough (Odo)”, his second official release of 2022, produced by Blaisebeatz and Philkeyz.
Kizz Daniel revealed in November 2017 that he was leaving his record company, G-Worldwide, to form his own label, Flyboy I.N.C. The old record label sued him in court, but he was found not guilty of any of the charges.
In May 2018, Kizz Daniel announced the change of his stage name from Kiss Daniel to Kizz Daniel, which was promptly mirrored on his social media profiles. New Spotify and Apple Music profiles were made instantly under the name Kizz Daniel, featuring his new tracks.
In a press release distributed to media outlets in June 2018, Kizz Daniel’s previous record label, G-Worldwide, announced that it had acquired the rights to the name “Kizz Daniel” and warned the singer not to use the name or suffer legal penalties.
Daniel responded to his former record label, G-Worldwide’s lawsuit and statement in October 2018 via his own lawyer. In April 2022, Emperor Geezy and Daniel settled their differences outside of court in a popular video titled #Peace&Love.
Kizz Daniel earned the Song of the Year award at the Soundcity MVP Awards in February 2023, which were hosted at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos, for “Buga”.
