Chippa United head coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi has cast serious doubt over Stanley Nwabali’s chances of featuring for Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, citing the goalkeeper’s ongoing injury concerns.

Vilakazi disclosed that Nwabali is still struggling with the setback he picked up while on duty with the Super Eagles in Morocco, noting that the situation remains far from ideal for a quick return.

Coach confirms need for surgery

According to Vilakazi, the Chippa United shot-stopper requires a hand operation in addition to recovering from an ankle injury.

He revealed that Nwabali had been playing through pain for an extended period and aggravated the condition during his recent international assignment.

Despite the coach’s reservations, he acknowledged that the player remains optimistic about making a quick recovery.

Nwabali has maintained his status as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, a position he has held even before Eric Chelle assumed the role of Super Eagles head coach.

The Super Eagles gear up for the Morocco tournament kicking off December 21, with head coach Eric Chelle expected to name his final 28-man squad.
