A man has raised alarm after alleging that his sister was assaulted and beaten by masquerades in Okpanam, near Asaba, while returning from work.
The incident, which he described as unprovoked, has sparked outrage on social media and renewed concerns about public safety and abuse disguised as cultural practices.

According to the man, the attack occurred despite the absence of any recognised festival or cultural event that would justify masquerades being on the streets.
He said his sister was going about her normal routine when she was allegedly confronted and physically attacked by the masquerades.
Expressing deep anger and frustration, the man warned that he would no longer tolerate such acts in the community.
“Look at what a masquerade did to my sister. She was assaulted and beaten by Okpanam masquerades while returning from work. There was no festival or event that required masquerades to be out,” he said.
He further vowed to push for strict consequences, adding, “I will make sure no masquerade comes out this festive season. Anyone I see will definitely go to prison for at least six months.”
His emotional outburst has drawn widespread attention online, with many Nigerians condemning the alleged assault.
