Chris Young is an American singer and songwriter who rose to notoriety in 2006 after winning the fourth season of the reality television singing competition Nashville Star. The triumph earned him a deal with the record label RCA Nashville, which released his self-titled debut solo studio album later that year.

He went on to release many more studio albums, including The Man I Want to Be (2009), Neon (2011), A.M. (2013), I’m Comin’ Over (2015), It Must Be Christmas (2016), Losing Sleep (2017), and Raised on Country (2021). In 2017, he became a member of the Grand Ole Opry, a weekly American country music stage show in Nashville, Tennessee.

Chris Young was born on June 12, 1985, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. In his youth, he went to Trinity United Methodist Church. His grandfather, Richard Yates, performed on the Louisiana Hayride.

Young developed an interest in music at a young age, appearing in a number of children’s theater shows. He joined the Oakland High School choir and started playing in local bars while there. In 2000, he performed as a mariachi vocalist with his high school’s Winter Drumline in the production “A Night at the Palladium.”

The quartet competed in the Winter Guard International Tournament in Ohio that year. Young received the National YoungArts Award and was named a Presidential Scholar of the Arts in 2003. While attending college, he continued to tour, presenting around 150 gigs per year.

In 2006, Chris Young was the house vocalist at Cowboys Dance Hall in Arlington, Texas. Park Scott and Keith Swan recommended that he audition for Nashville Star in Houston, Texas. He entered the show and won in 2006. His victory won him a deal with RCA Records Nashville, and he released his debut single, “Drinkin’ Me Lonely,” later that year.

That song hit number 42 on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and was the lead single off his self-titled debut album, produced by Buddy Cannon. “You’re Gonna Love Me,” the album’s second single, peaked at number 48.

“Voices” was Young’s third single, released in May 2008. He promoted the tune during the CMA Music Festival in June by emailing it to fans who stopped by his booth. In August, “Voices” earned him his first Billboard Top 40 entry, reaching 37.

His second album, The Man I Want to Be, came out in September 2009. It was produced by James Stroud and included cover versions of Waylon Jennings’ “Rose in Paradise” (a duet with Willie Nelson) and Tony Joe White’s “Rainy Night in Georgia.” Young’s fourth chart single, “Gettin’ You Home (The Black Dress Song),” became his first number one song in October 2009. The album’s title tune debuted in November 2009. Both it and a re-release of “Voices” reached number one.

He was nominated for the 2010 Academy of Country Music Top New Solo Vocalist award alongside Luke Bryan and Jamey Johnson. On November 10, 2010, he presented at the 44th Annual Country Music Awards. He was nominated for a Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance for “Gettin’ You Home.”

Young released his single “Tomorrow” in February 2011. It became his fourth consecutive number one. The Neon album was released in July 2011. The album features his sixth consecutive number one single, “You,” as well as the title tune and “I Can Take It From There.” In August 2012, “Tomorrow” became his first platinum single.

In 2013, Young served as an Ambassador for the CMA Songwriters Series, which was held in Belfast, Dublin, London, and Paris to promote country music internationally.

On May 13, 2013, country radio received the first song from Young’s fourth studio album, “Aw Naw.” It peaked at number three on the Country Airplay chart in November 2013. On May 12, 2015, Young released a new track called “I’m Comin’ Over.” It was the lead single off his fifth studio album of the same name, which came out on November 13, 2015. The same month, “I’m Comin’ Over” became his sixth number-one single on the Country charts, the first since “You” in February 2012. In late 2016, Young embarked on the 14-show I’m Comin’ Over Tour to support the record.

The album’s second single, “Think of You,” featuring Cassadee Pope, was released on January 4, 2016. It topped the Country charts in May 2016. On June 6, 2016, the third single, “Sober Saturday Night”—a duet with Vince Gill—was released. It peaked at number one on the Country Airplay chart in March 2017. In October 2016, Young released a country Christmas album titled It Must Be Christmas.

On May 12, 2017, the first song from his sixth album, “Losing Sleep,” was released to country radio. On August 23, 2017, Young confirmed that the album’s title would also be Losing Sleep. On February 10, 2018, it peaked at number one on the Country Airplay chart. The album’s second single was called “Hangin’ On.” On August 29, 2017, country veteran Vince Gill encouraged Young to join the Grand Ole Opry. Brad Paisley officially inducted him.

Young released “Raised on Country,” the lead song from his seventh studio album, in January 2019. The album’s second single, “Drowning,” dropped on September 23, 2019. The album’s third song, “Famous Friends,” which features Young’s pal Kane Brown, was released on November 20, 2020. The album, sometimes known as Famous Friends, was released on August 6, 2021. The fourth single from the album, “At the End of a Bar,” featuring Mitchell Tenpenny, was released on September 13, 2021.

In 2023, Young released the singles “Looking for You” and “Young Love & Saturday Nights.” His tenth album, Young Love & Saturday Nights, was released on March 22, 2024.

Young announced in December 2024 that he had signed with Black River Entertainment after quitting his longstanding record company, RCA Nashville. In April 2025, he released his first single with the label, “Til the Last One Dies.” On July 8, 2025, Young announced his impending tenth album, I Didn’t Come to Leave, and released the title single. The album is set for release on October 17, 2025.

Young went into septic shock on August 13, 2013, while on his way to a tour concert in Montana, due to an infected minor cut on his thigh. He was transported by EMS to a hospital in Denver. Young was promptly prescribed medication by the medical staff, and he underwent surgery to treat the illness on August 14.

Young returned home under the care of his doctor. As expected, the procedure had an impact on his movement, and his doctor advised him to wait a full week thereafter before returning to touring. Young resumed on August 22.

Chris canceled a CMA Music Festival concert in June 2014 due to an unfortunate kitchen knife cut to his left hand. The cut necessitated surgery to repair tendons in the hand.

In January 2024, he was mistakenly arrested by a TABC agent following an altercation in a pub. The charges were subsequently withdrawn.
