Hungary’s Barnabas Varga confirmed stable after collision with Scotland goalkeeper
Hungary’s Barnabas Varga has been confirmed stable in hospital after suffering multiple facial fractures in a collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn.
The incident occurred during Hungary’s crucial 1-0 win against Scotland, a result that keeps their Euro 2024 tournament hopes alive.
The collision happened in the second half when Gunn punched a free-kick away, leaving Varga motionless on the pitch.
Immediate concern from teammates prompted urgent medical attention, with Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai visibly frustrated over the delay in bringing a stretcher.

Varga was subsequently rushed to a Stuttgart hospital, where he is set to undergo surgery for his injuries.
“Several bones in Barnabas Varga’s face were broken during the collision, and he also suffered a concussion,” stated the Hungarian FA.
Meanwhile, Scotland goalkeeper Gunn expressed regret stating, “It was a bit of a blur. I thought I had to come and thought I’d done well.
“It was a bit painful. Hopefully the guy is all right. I can’t really remember too much about it.”
However, the match resumed after a five-minute pause, resulting in a last-minute goal by Kevin Csoboth.
Hungary’s win, celebrated with tributes to Varga, keeps them third in Group A with a chance to advance as one of the best third-placed teams.
Scotland, on the other hand, finished bottom, exiting the tournament in group stage once again.
