The Nigeria Police has confirmed the fatal attack on an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officer by armed internet fraudsters, commonly known as Yahoo Boys, in Anambra State.

The attack, which also left another officer critically injured, occurred on Friday during an EFCC operation targeting suspected cybercriminals.

According to reports, the EFCC team, dispatched from their zonal headquarters in Enugu, came under heavy gunfire, forcing them to retreat for safety.

Tragically, the slain officer, an assistant superintendent, had recently passed a promotional examination. The injured officer remains in critical condition at an undisclosed hospital as of Friday night.

Speaking anonymously, an EFCC officer highlighted the lack of life insurance for personnel, lamenting the absence of compensation for fallen officers’ families since the tenure of Farida Waziri. “The families of the officer that died today won’t be getting anything. Can we then say he died for nothing?” the officer remarked.

Anambra State Police Command Spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, adding that investigations are ongoing.

“Investigation into the sad incident is ongoing. The suspect is in custody, and the firearm has been recovered. Further details will be communicated, please,” Ikenga told Daily Trust.
