Gundogan triggers Man City contract extension, but future remains uncertain
Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has automatically triggered a one-year contract extension, but there are still doubts about his long-term future at the club.
The German international, who returned to City from Barcelona last summer, signed a one-year deal with an appearance-based option for a further year.
City manager Pep Guardiola confirmed the clause has been activated, extending Gundogan’s stay until the summer of 2026.
“He has one more year contract, definitely,” Guardiola told reporters. “What’s going to happen in the summer, I don’t know, but he has one more year contract now.”
Gundogan has recently regained form and started the last five matches, drawing praise from Guardiola for his impact in midfield.
However, the City boss hinted that the midfielder’s future at the Etihad is not guaranteed, especially as the club prepares for possible squad changes, including the expected departure of Kevin De Bruyne.
Despite the extension, Gundogan could still leave the club this summer if a mutual decision is made.
He is expected to remain an important part of Guardiola’s squad as they push to secure Champions League qualification and target FA Cup success.
