2025 CWC: “I’m so angry” – Jackson apologises after second red card in four games
Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson has issued a public apology after being sent off in a critical Club World Cup group-stage defeat to Flamengo.
The red card compounded what has become a disciplinary crisis for the 24-year-old.
Jackson, introduced as a second-half substitute on his birthday, lasted just minutes before being dismissed for a reckless studs-up challenge on Ayrton Lucas.
It marks his second red card in just four appearances, following a violent conduct suspension received in May at Newcastle United, which he is yet to fully serve in the Premier League.
The Senegal international posted on social media:
“I want to say sorry. To the club, the staff, my teammates, and all the fans watching, I let you down… I’m so angry at myself… No excuses. I take full responsibility. I’ll reflect, I’ll grow, and I’ll come back stronger.”
Jackson’s ill-timed challenge comes at a sensitive time. He is now facing internal pressure with Liam Delap, Chelsea’s recent signing, ready to capitalise on his absence.
With Jackson suspended for the final group match against ES Tunis, Delap is now in pole position to stake his claim for the No. 9 role ahead of the Premier League opener.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca will be forced to address Jackson’s discipline issues quickly, as the club face a must-win scenario to advance in the tournament.
