Martin Zubimendi has reportedly landed in London ahead of sealing his long-awaited switch to Arsenal.

The La Roja international had agreed terms with Arsenal weeks ago, but late interest from Real Madrid briefly put the deal in jeopardy.

However, Madrid’s pursuit cooled after club president Florentino Perez blocked a move, believing Los Blancos are sufficiently stocked in midfield.

Arsenal, meanwhile, made a more convincing and financially attractive offer.

The Premier League side agreed to pay more than Zubimendi’s €60 million release clause, giving them the flexibility to spread payments over several instalments, an important factor for Real Sociedad, who are now prepared to cash in.

Mikel Arteta, alongside technical director Andrea Berta, played a crucial role in securing the player’s signature.

Arteta personally pitched Zubimendi’s role in Arsenal’s system, helping tip the scales in the Gunners’ favour.

Zubimendi’s move aligns with a necessary midfield reshuffle at the Emirates. Jorginho has already left for Flamengo, and Thomas Partey is out of contract at the end of June.

The Spaniard is expected to take over as the team’s deep-lying No.6, forming a new-look midfield with Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, and potentially Mikel Merino, another player linked to the Gunners.

Although an official unveiling may be delayed until July 1 due to financial reporting requirements, all indications suggest the deal is effectively done.
