Cristiano Ronaldo prioritises sixth World Cup over Club World Cup opportunity
Cristiano Ronaldo has claimed that his decision to remain with Al Nassr and skip the FIFA Club World Cup was driven by a desire to prepare adequately for what could be a historic sixth appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking in an Instagram video released by Al Nassr following the announcement of his new two-year contract extension, the 40-year-old Portuguese forward confirmed he turned down multiple offers to play in this summer’s Club World Cup.
“I had some offers to play [Club] World Cup but I think it didn’t make sense because I prefer to have a good rest, a good preparation,” Ronaldo said.
“This season will be very long because it’s a World Cup season, at the end of the season. So I want to be ready not only for Al Nassr but also for the national team.”
Ronaldo, who recently lifted the UEFA Nations League trophy with Portugal after a dramatic penalty shootout win over Spain, emphasised the importance of managing his fitness and form ahead of the 2026 World Cup in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
If selected, he and Lionel Messi could become the first players in history to appear in six FIFA World Cups.
Ronaldo already holds the record as the only male player to score in five different tournaments.
His contract extension with Al Nassr keeps him in the Saudi Pro League until at least June 2027, which would see him playing professionally up to the age of 42.
