“I’m still in Labour Party” – Peter Obi breaks silence amid coalition drama
The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi has broken his silence on the controversy surrounding his involvement in the newly formed ADC-led coalition, stating that he remains a committed member of the Labour Party (LP).
Speaking on Friday during the flag-off of the LP governorship campaign for Anambra State candidate Dr. George Moghalu and his running mate Lady Ifeoma Okaro, Obi clarified that although he is part of the coalition, he has not dumped the Labour Party.
“Let me put it categorically clear, I and the National Assembly members of the Labour Party are part of the coalition that has adopted ADC for the 2027 election, and other parties will join us,” he explained.
“But today, we are members of the Labour Party. If anybody asks you which party Peter Obi belongs to today, tell him Peter Obi is in Labour Party. If anybody asks you about the coalition, tell him the coalition is for 2027,” Obi added.
Obi also used the opportunity to reaffirm his presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting he is still in the race.
“Everyone has the right to run for president; I won’t stop anyone. But if anyone asks, let them know I am in the race, and no one does it better than me,” he said confidently.
The campaign event was aimed at boosting support for LP’s governorship candidate, George Moghalu, who in his speech promised to lead Anambra with the fear of God and a deep sense of responsibility. He also assured the people of a tax policy without harassment.
“Although my administration will ask people to pay tax, we will never unleash pestle-wielding touts on the good people of the state,” Moghalu said.
Also speaking at the event, LP State Chairman Ugochukwu Emeh said the rally was to deepen the party’s grassroots presence and reaffirm its commitment to equity, good governance, and people-first leadership.
