The Northern Elders Forum has expressed sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a rare, upright, selfless, and incorruptible leader who served Nigeria with unwavering integrity and discipline.

In a condolence message released shortly after the news of his death broke, the Forum paid tribute to the late ex-president, emphasizing his steadfast commitment to nation-building and his enduring legacy of honesty and accountability.

According to the statement, Buhari’s life was defined by simplicity, patriotism, and a deep sense of national duty.

“General Buhari was not only a soldier and statesman but a symbol of integrity and principled leadership. He was resolute in his belief in a unified, peaceful, and prosperous Nigeria,” the statement read. “His tenure in office and public service embodied the values of discipline, accountability, and national pride. As a devout nationalist and Pan-Africanist, he championed Nigeria’s sovereignty, defended its territorial integrity, and advanced democratic governance across Africa.”

The Forum also recalled Buhari’s pivotal alliance with Bola Ahmed Tinubu and others that led to the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a political coalition that ended the 16-year rule of the People’s Democratic Party in 2015.

“His passing marks a solemn moment in Nigeria’s history. Beyond the personal grief of his family and close associates, the entire nation shares in this profound loss. His legacy — built on sacrifice, duty, and vision — will continue to guide and inspire generations of Nigerian leaders and citizens.”

President Muhammadu Buhari passed away on Sunday in London while receiving medical treatment.
He served as Nigeria’s elected president from 2015 to 2023 and previously as military Head of State from 1984 to 1985.
