“My comment on Peter Obi was only about his security, not a threat” – Gov Okpebholo
Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has said that his recent statement regarding former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was not a threat but a call for adherence to standard security protocol.
The clarification comes after public backlash followed Okpebholo’s remarks at a defection rally in Uromi last Friday, where he stated that Obi should not enter the state without prior clearance from the government.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the governor explained that his position was purely based on security responsibilities and not political intimidation.
“As the Chief Security Officer of Edo State, it is the Governor’s constitutional duty to protect the lives and property of residents and visitors alike. This responsibility includes ensuring proper security arrangements during high-profile visits or events likely to attract large gatherings or media attention,” the statement read.
Okpebholo’s media aide further stressed that the governor’s directive was particularly important given the increasing threats against religious leaders and public figures across the country.
He noted that Edo State has witnessed tragic incidents involving the abduction and killing of clergy, including seminarians.
Addressing the issue of public donations made during such visits, the governor advised caution and discretion.
He urged that all donations, while commendable, should be done in consultation with security agencies to prevent drawing unwanted attention to vulnerable institutions.
“Public giving, especially in volatile times, must be handled carefully. The governor’s advice aligns with biblical guidance in Matthew 6:2–4, which emphasizes private charity over public display,” the statement added.
Okpebholo also drew a comparison between his own approach and that of Peter Obi during his time as governor, recalling that Obi once detained former FCT Minister Nasir El-Rufai during a visit to Anambra State.
He cautioned against politicizing the issue, urging political leaders and supporters to respect local security protocols rather than misinterpreting them for political gain.
“The State Government will not fold its arms and allow politically driven actions to compromise public safety. Leaders, regardless of their stature, are expected to comply with the security and protocol standards of any region they visit,” the statement concluded.
