The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has issued a stern warning to civilians against harboring suspected criminals, cautioning that such actions would have serious consequences.
General Musa made this statement during his visit to troops of Operation FASAN YANMA at the 8 Division Headquarters in Sokoto, following the Christmas Day bombing of two communities in Silame Local Government Area by the Nigerian Air Force.
The airstrike, intended to neutralize Lakurawa terrorists, mistakenly hit the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities, resulting in the death of at least 10 villagers and injuries to several others.
In response to the incident, Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal called for an independent investigation.

Speaking to journalists, General Musa suggested that the affected villagers bore some responsibility for allegedly sheltering terrorists. He emphasized that the military would not accept blame for incidents involving communities that associate with militants.
“I urge everyone not to harbor suspected criminals, whether they are Lakurawa or bandits. Expose them and distance yourself from their activities,” he stated. “Anyone who harbors such individuals makes themselves a legitimate target. Do not support or live near them to avoid unnecessary risks.”
General Musa added that the military remains committed to its operations and will investigate any errors during missions. He assured that measures were taken to minimize collateral damage and noted that they had video evidence of the operation in question.
He also appealed to the media not to amplify the voices of bandits or other criminal elements and reaffirmed that Nigeria would not permit foreign military bases on its soil. Additionally, he urged neighboring countries, including Niger, Chad, and Benin, to collaborate with Nigeria in addressing regional security challenges.
During a luncheon with the troops, General Musa commended their dedication and sacrifice in ensuring Nigeria’s security, particularly in the Joint Task Force Northwest Operation FASAN YAMMA.
He acknowledged their achievements in dislodging Lakurawa terrorists from camps in Sokoto and Kebbi States, describing it as a testament to the military’s commitment to tackling security threats.
He reassured the troops of continued support, pledging to sustain operational tempo across all deployments. “The coming year offers an opportunity to achieve transformative victories in our operational theatres, especially in Operation FASAN YAMMA,” he said, encouraging the troops to remain focused on securing decisive victories.
General Musa also visited a military hospital to check on wounded troops receiving treatment.
Meanwhile, Governor Ahmed Aliyu visited the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities to assess the damage and express condolences to the families of the victims. He announced a donation of ₦20 million and 100 bags of assorted food items to support the grieving families.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement on X.com, noting, “Over 10 persons have been reported dead as a result of the bomb released in two communities in Silame Local Government Area, Sokoto State. The bomb, intended to target Lakurawa terrorists, instead landed in Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities.”
