Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has expressed his condolences to the government and people of Niger State over the tragic tanker explosion.
In a statement, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, revealed that the IGP extended heartfelt sympathies to the state following the tanker explosion on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Dikko Junction, along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway.
The incident occurred when a truck carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) lost control and caught fire, claiming over 73 lives, injuring many others, and destroying several shops and properties.

The IGP stressed the critical need for strict adherence to road safety protocols to prevent such tragedies. He issued a stern warning against negligence and violations of traffic regulations, which often lead to catastrophic accidents.
To enhance road safety, the IGP directed State Commissioners of Police to strengthen their Motor Traffic Divisions (MTDs) in collaboration with traffic management agencies. This is aimed at ensuring the strict enforcement of traffic rules and established safety measures on highways.
Additionally, IGP Egbetokun urged vehicle owners and drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and to comply with traffic regulations to prevent future tragedies.
While offering prayers for the souls of the departed, the IGP called on all stakeholders, including transport operators and the general public, to prioritize safety and responsibility in their actions to avoid similar incidents in the future.
