2026 WCQ: Chelle laments poor preparation ahead of Benin clash
Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has expressed frustration over the team’s limited preparation time ahead of Tuesday’s decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic in Uyo.
Nigeria currently sit third in Group C with 14 points, needing a victory to top the group if South Africa drop points against Rwanda.
Chelle disclosed that visa challenges and a delayed flight from South Africa disrupted their plans, forcing the team to train only once before the crucial encounter.
“This camp was very difficult because we didn’t have many training sessions due to visa issues and flight delays. We only managed to train on Monday,” the Malian tactician said.

The team reportedly spent an extra day in Luanda after their aircraft suffered a cracked windscreen, further cutting into valuable preparation time.
‘We must stay mentally strong’
Despite the setbacks, Chelle said his priority is to keep his players mentally sharp and motivated to deliver when it matters most.
“My first instinct is to bring something positive to my players. We need to push these guys, especially mentally,” he stated.
“I have to speak my mind to the players and keep them focused on every aspect of the game, our plan, their mindset, and how they feel before the match.”
Nigeria must deliver
The Super Eagles are expected to come out aggressively against Gernot Rohr’s Benin Republic, while guarding against counterattacks.
Chelle, however, maintained that focus and execution will determine whether Nigeria’s World Cup qualification hopes stay alive.
