Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has strongly criticised reports alleging that President Bola Tinubu distributed Toyota Hilux trucks, Hummer buses, and Land Cruisers to Renewed Hope Ambassadors coordinators ahead of the 2027 campaign mobilisation.

In a detailed post on X (formerly Twitter), Obi described the alleged development as “profound insensitivity and abuse of trust.”

Obi Faults Reported Use of Public Resources

Obi said Nigerians were facing intense hardship, and any form of luxury spending by government officials was unacceptable.

According to him, “At a time when Nigerians are struggling with hunger, unemployment, and insecurity, the decision of any government to allocate limited public resources for distributing luxury vehicles… is not only insensitive but also represents a serious moral failure.”

He added that leaders should not treat the suffering of citizens as “mere background for political theatrics.”

“A Tragic Misplacement of Priorities”

Obi wrote: “While ordinary Nigerians are grappling with poverty and hopelessness, those in leadership positions continue to flaunt their wealth by driving brand-new Land Cruisers, Hiluxes, and Hummers.”

He said the alleged actions symbolised a “tragic misplacement of priorities” that Nigerians must reject.

Leadership Should Focus on Welfare, Not Luxury

Obi insisted that public resources should go towards urgent needs, not political mobilisation.

He said: “Leadership, especially in these challenging times, should focus on providing food for the hungry, ensuring access to healthcare for the sick, restoring hope for millions of unemployed youth, and securing our communities.”

He added that distributing expensive vehicles “should not be what governance has become.”

“This Is Not Governance”

Obi further stated: “It is disheartening that, at a time when children are dropping out of school… when mothers are dying during childbirth due to lack of basic medical supplies… the response from those in power is to purchase and distribute luxury vehicles.”

He described this as “profound insensitivity and an abuse of public trust disguised as a political strategy.”

According to him, such actions “betray the essence of public service.”

Obi Reaffirms Hope for National Rebirth

Despite his concerns, Obi ended on a hopeful note: “At times like this, we must recognise that Nigeria cannot continue on a path of wastefulness, insensitivity, and misplaced priorities. Our citizens deserve leadership grounded in empathy, prudence, and accountability.”

He concluded by saying he still believes in the nation’s future: “Regardless of how bleak the situation may appear today, I firmly believe that a New Nigeria is not only necessary; it is possible.”
