A monarchy is a form of government in which sovereignty is actually or nominally embodied in one or several individual(s) reigning until death or abdication. They are called the monarchs.
The Monarchy of Nigeria (the Nigerian monarchy) was the system of government in which a hereditary monarch was the sovereign of Nigeria from 1960 to 1963. Nigeria shared the Sovereign with the other Commonwealth realms. The monarch’s constitutional roles were mostly delegated to the Governor-General of Nigeria. The royal succession was governed by the English Act of Settlement of 1701.
The monarchy was abolished in 1963, when Nigeria became a republic within the Commonwealth.
