Euro 2024: Gakpo shows class as Netherlands thrash Romania 3-0 to advance

Netherlands’ Cody Gakpo netted his third goal of the tournament, plus double from Donyell Malen to seal a 3-0 win against Romania.

The win over Romania on Tuesday, ensured the Dutch side advanced to the quarter-finals of the competition.

After facing heavy criticism for their defensive performance in a 3-2 loss to Austria in their final group game, the Dutch responded with a more composed and controlled display to reach the Euro last eight for the first time since 2008.

Gakpo opened the scoring in the 20th minute, drilling a low angled shot past goalkeeper Florin Nita at the near post.

Malen then sealed the win with two late goals, setting up a quarter-final clash with either Austria or Turkey, who face each other Tuesday evening.

Netherlands dominated possession in the encounter and created almost five times more chances than Romania.
