Ganduje resigns as APC National Chairman
An unexpected news broke out from within Nigeria’s ruling party as Abdullahi Umar Ganduje resigns as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), effective immediately.
The former Kano State governor cited health reasons for stepping down, noting that he needs to prioritise his well-being.
Ganduje’s resignation comes less than a year after he was appointed APC chairman in August 2023, a tenure marked by internal party rifts, legal challenges, and mounting controversy.
Although his official resignation letter attributes the decision to health concerns, insiders suggest a more complex backdrop involving political tensions and allegations of financial misconduct.
Sources within the party claim discontent had been brewing, particularly over what some described as “excessive financial demands” from Ganduje’s office. Reports indicate that aspiring candidates for area council seats in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had protested high fees required to secure the party’s ticket.
Ganduje, who served as Governor of Kano State from 2015 to 2023, has faced mounting scrutiny in recent months. In April 2024, a Kano State High Court issued an ex parte order restraining him from acting as a party member following internal disputes. Around the same period, the APC North Central Forum filed a lawsuit seeking his removal, which was later struck out by a Federal High Court in Abuja.
As of press time, the APC has yet to release an official statement on Ganduje’s resignation, leaving party members and political analysts speculating about the future direction of the party and the next possible replacement.
Ganduje’s departure adds to the growing list of political shakeups in Nigeria’s ruling party, raising questions about leadership stability and internal democracy ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
