Onana ruled out of Man United pre-season with hamstring injury
Manchester United have been dealt a major setback ahead of the 2024/25 campaign as first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana has been ruled out of pre-season after suffering a hamstring injury during training at Carrington.
According to The Telegraph, initial scans indicate that Onana could be sidelined for six to eight weeks, putting his availability for United’s Premier League opener against Arsenal on August 17 in serious doubt.
The injury leaves new head coach Ruben Amorim with limited goalkeeping options as the club prepares for a critical rebuild after a dismal 2024/25 season that saw United finish 15th in the league.
While Altay Bayindir is expected to deputise in the interim, backup options include veteran Tom Heaton, who recently signed a contract extension, and 21-year-old Radek Vitek.
The development may now accelerate United’s interest in recruiting a new goalkeeper.
Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez has been touted as a potential target, with reports suggesting that the Argentine World Cup winner is open to a summer move.
Martinez is considered by many within the club hierarchy to be a defensive upgrade on Onana, who came under heavy criticism for his performances last season.
