THE DAY OF ASHES 2016 (ASH WEDNESDAY ) IN FESTAC TOWN

The first day of the Lenten season is Ash Wednesday, which is also known as the “Day of Ashes.” In the Christian religion, this marks the start of 40 days and 40 nights of sacrifice/fasting days. Christians will “give up” something until Easter, the Holiest day in the religion. It was scheduled for Wednesday, February 10th 2016.

It is literally marked on the forehead of observant Christians. At church services across the world, the ashes of burned palm branches mixed with holy water or oil are applied in the shape of a cross on the heads of worshipers.

Ash Wednesday is observed by many Western Christians, including Anglicans Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, and Roman Catholics.

Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of blessing ashes made from palm branches blessed on the previous year’s Palm Sunday, and placing them on the heads of participants to the accompaniment of the words “Repent, and believe in the Gospel” or “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return”
